Friday afternoon I headed to the Mountain Lake Biological Station of the University of Virginia outside of Blacksberg, VA. I took the somewhat scenic route which was north on I61 and then west on local roads. They were quite pretty but toward the end they were dirt roads and quite rough. My GPS and google disagreed on my arrival time by about 15 minutes even close to the end which seemed odd as they had me taking the same route. The difference turned out to be about 10 miles of very rough dirt roads which my GPS said I should be doing at the state speed limit of 55 (which I guess would be the speed limit, but nobody in their right mind would take those roads at 55). Google seems to have used more recent and more accurate estimates of the appropriate speed there. Mountatin Lake Biological Station near Blacksburg, VA. =0=

Here is the building where most of us stayed. There were up to twenty people there at different times. There was a community kitchen and dining area as well as dorm rooms. I slept on the top bunk in the room whose door was on the far right of the porch here. It had a shared bathroom with the mirror room on the other side of the building. Below is a map of much of route on this road trip. There is a real pretty pond just off the camp as shown below. Mountatin Lake Biological Station near Blacksburg, VA. =0=

Here is the view from the porch of our building. Below is the largest building at the station. It has classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and labs. All with a pre-WWII feel. The MLBS is quite scenic. It seems that in the 20's the University of Virginia professors would go to Mountain Lake (and stay at the hotel we visited later). Then they built cabins around this area, each individualized (and named) for the professor who stayed there. Mountatin Lake Biological Station near Blacksburg, VA. =0=
