After almost a month of helping out with the Restore three days a week as the driver, Dave, had hurt his arm, I was back to helping out the builds. They are now working exclusively on one house on Odell Street. I had worked on this house early on when we were taking down the last of the interior wall next to the house next door. One of the reasons this is a rehab is because the two houses were right next to each other. Behind the interior wall there was nothing except the frame and the ancient wooden exterior wall of the house next door. It was clear there had been about three fires in this one year old house. In the basement, the back wall had to be replaced which left the back wall loose (above). You can see the loose dirt below the back wall and above the new basement wall. For the rest of the basement, they poured a concrete floor over the loose dirt and put metal lathe and cement over the brick foundation. Odell Street Build (Rehab). =0=

In the month I was away they put up two by threes on the first floor to support the drywall (above) for the outer walls, but for the wall shared with the house next door, they completely pulled out the old studs and put in a new frame with an inch and a half of dry wall as a fire wall (above and here). On the second floor, the floor was really rough and needed to be replaced. That meant pulling up the floor from one side and putting down a new floor and then building the load bearing frames and joists to support the roof. Once the new joists were put in place we could then take out the scaffolding that had been put in place to support the roof from the basement up. That would free up more of the floor to be pulled up and replaced. You can see the new load bearing walls and joists we built here and below. Odell Street Build (Rehab). =0=

Above is a view of the stairs they built from the basement up to the first floor. We used a ladder to get up to the second floor for now. Here is the entrance to the basement from the street. The basement ceiling is pretty low and the you really have to stoop to use that entrance. Below you can see a section of the old floor and temporary scaffolding to support that section of the roof. Also below are most of the folks from Hewitt, a software company, who helped out on a Thursday. Odell Street Build (Rehab). =0=

Toward the end of June we spent a day finishing up at Stephen Street. We had done pretty much all that we could until they had electricity and water, which is there now. Here is the finished kitchen with John touching up the paint. Below are Scott (new member of the Tuesday group), Ralph, and Barbara painting the new railing for the front porch (also below). Here is the back of the house and below is the back yard after volunteers did the landscaping and planted some very nice donated shrubs. Stephen Street Build. =0=
