In September Jay got serious about getting his driver's license. We started taking trips around the area so that he could practice his driving. On one trip we were headed to the Grafton Peace Pagoda. I was using my GPS and told Jay to take the next right (shown above), but he did not think I meant that little road (shown above) and tried to slow down and make the turn at the last moment. We didn't make it, but got stuck in the culvert. It was surprisingly steep / deep. Yikes! However, about three cars stop and the farmer from the house just across the street came out. He was able to pull us out with his traffic and there were no damages. It was also a good lesson about avoiding going off on the shoulder.... The road to the Peace Pagoda was a pretty unpaved road. To get to the Peace Pagoda you were asked to walk up the hill on the drvieway shown above. There was the temple and living quarters for the Japanese Buddhist nun who lives there most of the year. There was also the monument shown here. Below are pictures of the temple and its interior where I meditated for a few minutes. Grafton Peace Pagoda, NY. =0=

This is the pagoda proper which I circumambulated three times befoer we went on. We were able to meet the nun who was cleaning part of the pagoda. We also made a couple of day trips to Johnstown, NY where Jay took his road test on September 20. I was about an hour outside of the Albany area (to the West), but had the earliest available dates to test. Jay passed his road test first try. :-) It was a nice drive to Johnstown, NY (we avoided the toll road as it was needless expense and not useful practice for Jay), but I only took the two pictures below.
